At what point does a virtue become a vice? In this painting “Weight of Wings III,” I explore how an obsession with worthiness can estrange us from the divine. At first glance, the angel in this painting is lovely, quiet, and serene. Yet, looming overhead are massive wings that are a burden tethering her down instead of offering flight. On the surface, those battling scrupulosity, or obsessive morality, may appear idyllic. Their fixation on doing all the right things is often mistaken for noble righteousness. However, the unyielding burden of perfectionism and guilt has a soul-crushing and faith-crippling power.
